Eight Years in Broadcast New Media

In 2016 I joined Hubei Radio & Television's Traffic Radio as a new media editor. The early work was simple: write the article, publish to WeChat, repeat. But the platform mix expanded quickly — Weibo, video livestreams, short-form series, dialect talk shows. By 2018 I was thinking less about individual posts and more about what the account stood for: emergency updates, local intelligence, traffic. Things people actually needed, not just wanted.

By 2019 the WeChat account had become something I owned end-to-end: editorial calendar, original writing, headline testing, distribution timing, post-mortems on what worked. Publishing over 1,500 articles in a year taught me to read an audience the way a developer reads error logs — fast pattern recognition, constant iteration.

When Content Becomes Infrastructure

January 23rd, 2020. Wuhan goes into lockdown. For the next 97 days I published pandemic updates around the clock across two WeChat accounts and Jinri Toutiao. One afternoon I linked a COVID contact-tracing tool from a Douyin post to our WeChat account — 80,000 new followers arrived in twelve hours.

But what I remember more than any metric is the feeling of the work. People weren't reading for entertainment. They were navigating a crisis. Content, at its best, isn't content. It's infrastructure.

Building Audiences at Scale

After the pandemic I moved into a financial content studio and learned short-video production from the ground up: scripting, filming, editing, multi-platform distribution across Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili and Kuaishou. We grew one account from 0 to 238,000 followers. It was the year I stopped thinking of myself as a writer who made videos, and started thinking of myself as someone who built audiences.

Breaking News and the Pivot

In late 2021 I joined the station's converged media centre. The first video I worked on crossed 100 million plays and a million likes. Over the following years I covered breaking social news, ran technical support for live streams via OBS, and produced original investigative series - missing persons reunited with families, emergency medical transfers, flood rescue coordination. Stories where getting the details right had real-world consequences.

Then one evening I got tired of manually copying performance data out of Douyin's backend each month. I wrote a JavaScript script to do it automatically - export titles, thumbnails, play counts and likes, the whole table in one go. It saved hours. But more than that, it told me something: I liked solving the problem behind the problem. That instinct is what eventually led me to Monash.
